A Devotional from John 1:1-5

John 1:1-5

"Before time itself was measured, the Voice was speaking. The Voice was and is God. This celestial Word remained ever present with the Creator; His speech shaped the entire cosmos. Immersed in the practice of creating, all things that exist were birthed in Him. His breath filled all things with a living, breathing, light – a light that thrives in the depths of darkness, blazes through murky bottoms. It cannot and will not be quenched."

Devotional

Have you ever been filled with wonder as you looked at a sunset or a majestic scenic overlook and began to think about how the world got started? If you have ever stood on a beach with the great expanse of the ocean before you right before a storm or looked out from a mountaintop in the fall, you know what it is like to think Godward. At the beginning of John’s gospel, John wants to remind us of the book of Genesis. But in John’s gospel, he makes audacious claims about Jesus’ role in the creation of the world.

First, he says that Jesus was with God the Father and that Jesus’ Voice spoke the world into existence. Next, John reiterates what he just said and says that everything that exists began with Jesus. Finally, John says that Jesus’ breath filled all things with a living breathing light in the midst of the darkness. John’s intent is to take our breath away and to cause us to sit up and take notice of Jesus. Make no mistake about it; John is making extraordinary supernatural claims about Jesus. So John wants us to ask this question, so what’s the evidence that Jesus really was divine and that He is the Son of God? This is not an inconsequential matter to John. His gospel is going to give sign after sign as to why Jesus is God’s Son, and John wants the reader or hearer of his gospel to know that we can experience life with joy and abundance if we make the decision to believe in Jesus.

The gospel of John is an incredible invitation to step into new life through Jesus, the Anointed One. John wants us to know right from the beginning of his gospel that Jesus is more than qualified to be the source of real life for us. This amazing life can be experienced in a relationship with God through God’s one and only Son Jesus. We see in the very way that God brought this world into existence that God is a personal God that desires to communicate with His world and to be in relationship with us. Here is the amazing good news, God the Father has chosen to speak to the world through Jesus. So Jesus is the Voice that not only spoke us into existence and gave us life-giving breath, but He is the Voice that speaks His amazing life into our lives, as we believe in Him.

There is within the heart of every person this desire to really be alive and to be right in the middle of something exciting. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus is the one that you are looking for. What could your life look like if Jesus was asked to come into your life and do what only He could do?

Prayer

Dear Lord, I know that You are the source of real life. I believe in You Jesus and I ask you to live Your life through mine. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
